WEEK 3

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

Learning Professional Development activities:  are based around career occupations these include researching occupations to your suitable interest. It also includes generating ideas and gathering evidence to show that you are aware of the expectation of responsibility and award for your next job. It is the preparation and awareness of self-assessment, which will drive you through this unit. Various techniques are used to generate career ideas, for example using less structured approaches but instead looking at your own self-assessment of how you would react, change or adopt into working environment. This week we are creating our very own blog.

Media law: we started the 1st hour of the lecture by drawing a sketch of the person sitting next to us and through this, we understood the copyright act. This was by creating our own work and writing the owner name, which is yourself to dictate the publisher therefore it, becomes illegal under the copyright act for anyone to copy your work. We talked through the legislation and the restriction of copyright act throughout the seminar.

We also defined what copyright act is and looked at the type of work and event that decides the duration of copyright. For example, type of work literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, event is ' author dies 'and the duration from end of year event is 70 years. This changes as its 50 years for computer generated work and 25 years for typographical arrangements of publicised editions.

Contemporary Media Communications: we had a spokesman come in from BBC in the lecture to explain the methods used to gain information from people this was very useful as it will help us toward our final group presentation we are working in groups to create and present presentation on ethnic minorities and the type of music they listen to. This week we are creating a survey using the website monkey survey to address question relating the subject to ethnic minorities. In the seminar, our group came up with many ideas and question in what we think are suitable and appropriate question to ask members of society. We faced few difficulties such as cutting down the survey and including the question that are relevant yet important for the presentation as we had written down too many question to narrow it down. This will continue in next week before the full completion of the survey.

Human and Financial Management: we looked at competency levels in an organisation. From level 1 looking at activities of all employees to level 4 being activities conducted by top managers. The task was to find out what is important for an organisation for level 2 and 3. This we figured out was the operational and tactical level. Following in the seminar, we looked how different organisation advertises for recruitment. We had bought 4 adverts as a task from home and discussed and compared the adverts in relation to the layout how the organisation attracts employees for instance in the job description include the big salary or use of persuasive language etc. We also looked at the negatives for instance organisation consider the evaluation analysis as advertising could be costly and some organisation do not include salary as it may put off some people or the salary can be negotiable.

Design Online Learning: first half of the lecture was looking at how online teaching can help people of all range to learn. We were shown few online learning methods for instance how to set up a blog or a wiki. This was very basic and perhaps addressed at those who are not in information technology courses. It was aimed at school children or for anybody who does not know how to use or set up wiki or blog. Also we wren given a task between set of groups. A blog was given to us and we had to discuss within us what our response to that blog would begin the seminar we looked and discussed how previous students in this unit did their assignment. This was shown by few examples on PowerPoint and few handouts.

Contemporary Organisation: In the lecture, we viewed a video of buses running in Manchester. The point of this was to see what is expected by customer’s bus driver’s financial owners and managers. Later for this we worked in groups firstly to discuss what is expected by buses in Manchester for customers for instance food customer service...time management. Clean buses, cheap tickets to attract customers. Then we discussed the issues of buses like overcrowded buses, tickets expensive, late dirty buses. Once the issues were obvious we worked as groups to see how we would measure a target so the service is better. For instance as customer we want the buses to arrive on time how we would meet the requirement and the achieving by the service providers. This was later discussed in class.

WEEK 10

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

Learning Professional Development: This week we put together the video we made in week 9 in the lab for our portfolio. I visited the website on going from week 9. About advice needed before you go for your interview you need to find out everything you can about the company. Read your application,CVcovering letter, so that you can think about your skills and qualifications, the question can be on any topic so it’s best to be fully prepared also minor things like make sure you are comfortable how you and what you sitting on if you need water ask before. Dealing with objections, turning negatives into positives, its best to be clear and relate it to your own experience and skills.

Human Financial Recourse: This week we looked at collective institutions. These are trade unions, groups of employees in an organisation representing their employees. It was declined since 1979. We also looked at employment management. This is about creating opportunities for employees to connect with their collegues.it places flexibility change and continuous improvement what it means to be an employee. To understand this in the seminar we did grope activity o employee involvement which is basically initiated by management getting the employers involved. To employee participation which is initiated by employees, in decision making. And then partnership which is the trade union working on working conditions such as flexible hours for employees. We also looked at information and consultation of employee’s regulation 2004. Which is transmitted data transmitted by employer and consultation basically is the exchange of views.

Design Online Learning: this week we looked at the third edition to teaching training and learning.ocsing on the skills with physical dexterity. Baking a cake is an example. This is psychomotor domain. Another domain we were learning about is cognitive over the past weeks this is knowledge and knowing how to and why it rears to thinking skills. Another domain that is essential is affective domain. This is concerned with attitudes. So for example the need to eat healthy. This was further understood in seminar by given a situation and discussing in groups which domain is suited for each situation.

Media law: this week we looked at trademarks it is used to identify makers of goods or providers of services value to manufacturer / service provider, public awareness and identification, public perception of quality, law serves two purposes, to protect goodwill and reputation, to prevent public from being deceived and a mark must be used. We also looked at restricted monopoly this establishes property right in the mark, monopoly in use only in the classes under which the mark has been registered and also its use without permission or use of a deceptively similar mark may be an infringement.

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

Learning Professional Development activities:  are based around career occupations these include researching occupations to your suitable interest. Contemporary Media Communications: this week we actually worked toward putting together a presentation that we can show to our tutor to see the progress and any amendment that should be made. We got together and put it on PowerPoint. We all chose the background which is grey with white bold writing with shocking pink to attract the audience. We all helped each other with what to include on the slides. Firstly we started with the theoretical background of ethnic minorities followed but interview survey ending to dotcoms reports and graphs to concluding it with goals and drives of bib. This was presented however we came to conclusion that we have done too much information on the slides and need to cut some and only include important relevant information.
we continued room last week this time looking at the organizational environment. The PESTEL analysis. Political, economical, social technological, environmental and legal. All these make an analysis. This was discussed how its used in the actors in the macro environment or information systems. So political factors could be central and local undoing decisions for public and national libraries. Or even undoing decisions or higher educations. Another example I can provide is for economic actors changes in income and consumer spending patterns. And social factors such as age distribution o target market or changes in family structure. This was ally discussed in the seminar.

WEEK 9

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

Learning Professional Development: this week in LPD we worked in the labs to film interview and to be interviewed. We worked in groups of 3. Firstly by choosing a title for a job which I am interested in. Mine was teaching. As an interview I had to ask questions such as why you are interested in this job. Why did you apply for this post? What skills do you have that is required for this particular job and many more question in relevance to job title. After conducting the role of an interviewer I swapped with my group member by being interviewee and answering the question which I asked before. And then swap to filming this has to be uploaded for our portfolio therefore has to be saved.

Human Financial Recourse Management: this week we looked at reward management, concentrating on the aims and elements of reward. "Reward management is about how people are rewarded in accordance with their value to an organization. It is concerned with both financial and non-financial rewards, and embraces the philosophies, strategies, policies, plans and processes used by organizations to develop and maintain reward systems. Reward management processes deal with the design, implementation and maintenance of reward systems geared to the improvement of organizational, team and individual performance.” (Armstrong 2001, p.611).Basically, rewards are offered to attract employees to an organisation, to retain employees in an organisation, and to engage and motivate employees. Rewards reflect and reinforce what an organisation values. We also looked at welfare which includes health and safety.

Design Online Learning: In the lecture we discussed what we had learned from the learning outcomes in week 8 in relation to humanist, affective and motorist learning. We did this by looking at the lecture slides with few examples. Also this week we were told to look at the undergraduate assignment which had been set. We looked at all 3 theories of cognitive, behaverioul and humanist. Behavioural theory in psychology is a very substantial field: follow the links to the left or right for introductions to some of its more detailed contributions impinging on how people learn in the real world. The cognitive school is probably best defined by exclusion: if it isn’t biological, behaviourist or humanist, it's cognitive. Understanding this further by doing little group activities in the seminar.

Media law: This week in media law we continued looking at patent law from week 8 as it was not fully completed. We carried on looking at patent and the into internet.  Some dubious software inventions are granted patents in the Using. E-commerce applications serious risk of infringing patents from web-based activities in the UKdifficulty of enforcing a judgment of a US court against a person resident in the UK but with no physical presence in the US. We also looked at enforcement in relation to patent law. This is basic rule of jurisdiction if the validity of a patent is challenged, only the courts in the country where the patent is registered have jurisdiction to hear the case and proceedings may have to be commenced in several countries.

Managing Contemporary Organisation: this week we looked at strategic analysis. Appreciating the roles of strategic analysis. Which is basically ongoing process whereby organisation develop their plans and strategic through monitoring changes in the environment and also by developing their product and services portfolio and their internal competencies withal view to contributing to their mission and their objectives. We also looked at the strategic formulation process, the parallel corporate and strategic model by Johnson and scales 1999. which includes analysis strategic choice and strategic implementation.

Contemporary Media Communications: this week there was no lecture just a quick 15mins group discussion with tutor. Discussing the progress of our presentation. In this we showed what we want to include in the presentation. Once this was confirmed and we knew we are all on the right track we all met on Thursday in marl where we hold our meeting here we bought together all the information and pin pointed our main finding from our surveys and interviews. We also looked at the dotcom report to present and looked at other sources by visiting the library or books and articles.

WEEK 8

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

Human Financial Recourse Management: this week we focussed on performance appraisal. To briefly explain this Armstrong (2006) has defined performance management as “a systematic process for improving organizational performance by developing the performance of individuals and teams. It is a means of getting better results from the organization, teams and individuals by understanding and managing performance.... Processes exist for establishing shared understanding about what is to be achieved, and for managing and developing people in a way that increases the probability that it will be achieved ...” (pp.1-2). W also looked at examples to help us understand this definition for example Queens Mary university of London, employs reviewing their performance in section 2.

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

This week is self study week where we have to study about the theories ofcognitivist, behaverioul and humanist. Behavioural (or "behavioural") theory in psychology is a very substantial field: follow the links to the left or right for introductions to some of its more detailed contributions impinging on how people learn in the real world. The cognitive school is probably best defined by exclusion: if it isn’t biological, behaviourist or humanist, it's cognitive.

Media law: this week lecture slides were on patent law. It is important to understand that patents afford a powerful and particular protection for inventions that meet exacting standards. The monopoly granted to the owner is time limited and the invention will eventually fall into the public domain. Patents relate to new, industrially applicable inventions; they grant the owner a monopoly in their invention; types of patentable invention; historical development of the patent system and relevant statutes, including the Patents Act 2004.

Managing Contemporary Organisation: In preparation for week 9 we were told to do a test provided to help us understand emotional intelligence in depth. this is a online test acing you question such as when someone feels sad you feel sad too, then I have to choose out of options strongly agree, slightly, somewhat or strongly slightly disagree withstatments given .it also tell you your progression as you continue. I have printed this out to show it in my next week lecture. Definitions of EI mayor add emotion “a feeling state (including physiological responses and cognitions) that conveys information about relationships” (e.g. fear = flee).

Contemporary Media Communications: Last week some of the group members including myself were unable to attend the seminar due to religion festival. Therefore we did not present power presentation that week however we prepared during the week to make a short presentation including audios and basic information of what we have done achieved from our results so far. In the meeting we also shared our thoughts on what is important to include and exclude from the presentation. We have given the work to our tutor to show the work is complete. Humanistic "theories" of learning tend to be highly value-driven and hence more like prescriptions (about what ought to happen) rather than descriptions (of what does happen). This will be discussed further in week9.

Learning Professional Development: this week we used the session to get my CV up to date as well as being told what to do for the video interview that you we include in your portfolio submission. The importance of interview was also was also told in the slides, starting from the basic of your application being accepted to wanting to know more about you as an individual. Interviews are wide ranging to find out about you personal attributes. Including knowledge, experience, skills, interest etc.there are different types of interviews. One to one, panel interviews technical interviews etc. this information helped me prepare for future interviews that I may come across in my future.

WEEK 7

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

Learning Professional Development: this week one of the students who graduated from our course who works or the company Axe came as a guest speaker to aware us of the recruitment process by a company required from a graduate student. It’s not just the qualification that is important. I learnt that employers are looking or self assessment based questions to address you when taking an interview. It’s your persuasive language and experience as well as skills that you put into daily practice that is essential. It is not all about information technology driven attributes it’s more to do with communication. How you can communicate and put urn self across to be the best applicant there company needs. The graduate students are wanted as they are enthusiastic and motivated to work and bring new ideas to a company. Throughout the presentation we could ask any relevant questions and were asked question relating to working environment. This was with the bribery of quality street chocolates.

Human Recourse Management: this week we looked at learning interventions and how this related to categorising methods of learning. There are several methods of learning these can be put into 4 types. Pedagogical: which is teacher driven. For example a lecturer teaching students.2 group based, this involves case studies, projects, role play and business games.3 Andragogical this is more about the learner even though the support is provided but the learner has to be active. 4 individually based this is all about sell managing or instance in mum there is e-learning supported by Web ct for mum students. We also looked at a short clip video of 2 pigeons learning style. Honey and Mumford’s learning styles were also addressed in the seminar based on Kolb. There are four stages Experience (activist learners) followed by the Review (reflectors learners) o the experience to concluding from the experience by Theorist learners to finally planning the next steps by down to earth pragmatist learners.

Design Online Learning: this week we looked at how we know about how adults learn. To fully understand this we looked at the ELC. From experience which is the actually doing o something to its process. Then generalising it with an application of goals closure and climate setting. To further understand this theory we did group work using the same heading to understand how a child will learn through its experience of baking a cake. So for instance generalising would be for the child to follow the cake recipe. To asses our teach we wren told to bring scissors in this lecture. We were shown an example o paper cut once and it was a shape o a cross. We had to figure out how we can do this by only cutting the paper once. This was successfully done by our group member.

Media law: this week we looked law of breach of confidence this is important as we have to consider this in out assignment which is due later on. In the lecture we addressed everyday importance of the law of confidence in areas such as business information and trade secrets and the obligation of confidence that most persons owe to others, its basis in equity and usefulness as an adjunct to other IP rights. It is essential to look at development of the modern law of confidence; three elements that are required for an action for breach of confidence. The quality of confidence that information must have to be capable of protection; the four elements in testing confidential quality. Also further dimensions of trade secrets, third parties and public interest. The key areas of express contractual terms, the employer/employee relationship, ex-employees and covenants in restraint of trade, and unauthorised use; remedies available at law for breach of confidence. It is important to understand the distinction between copyright and confidence. Copyright protects the expression of an idea and Confidence can protect the idea itself.

Contemporary Media Communications: this week as a group we were given a task to do over the reading week to interview people of different age groups still sticking to the African and Asian population. 3 out 5 members completed the task set however the other two need to bring in the interviews so we can add the data and see the different reviews we got room the age range listening to music by ethnic minorities. I interviewed children and adults so I get a mixture of reviews of how music is used in their daily lives and the need of stimulation and relaxing from day to day activities. Our next step is gathering the information in a gnat chart so we can present to the audience our results. We also need to work on 1 of our group members who hesitates when it comes to presentation therefore we will do a practice presentation which will be conducted in a meeting on Thursday. This is also presented to the rest of the class to boost our confidence.

Managing Contemporary Organisation: This week we looked at emotional intelligence. By this we mean Emotion refers to a feeling state (including physiological responses and cognitions) that conveys information about relationships. For example, happiness is a feeling state that also conveys information about relationships, typically, that one would like to join with others. Similarly, fear is a feeling state that corresponds to a relationship, the urge to flee others. Intelligence refers to the capacity to reason validly about information. This use of the term in this fashion is consistent with scientific literature in the fields of intelligence, personality psychology, and emotions.

WEEK 6

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

Learning professional Development: This is progression week where we study at home. To take full advantage o this I decided to use my time wisely to continuing with the blog. even though I do the blog after each of my lecture sometime later meeting are held on the weekends for our group work, so I use the time to edit my blog for that unit and input information that we carried out which is useful or next week unit. I also did sum screen shots for assessment sheet 2 to prove that I have visited the websites for my career options. This was completed in Microsoft word.

Human Resources Management: In this reading week I used my time to look through the previous work and links that have been provided by or lecturer to update my sell with the work that we have done up till week 6.this week is to use the time to prepare and plan your assignment. We do not have to sign up for a meeting. however only needed to sign up if we have prepared for the meeting e.g. read the assignment brief, done some initial relevant 'reading around', drafted some content of your assignment, identified specific questions/issues that we need help with. I have done my reading this week, planned a rough draft of my assignment however still need to beak an appointment with my lecturer to confirm.

Design Online Learning: this consolidation week we were provided with a web link http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/elearning_pedagogy/intheirownwords  I visited this link in order to enhance on learning experiences of e- learning phase 1 and 2. To explain the Design for Learning Programme which commenced in May 2006 and concluded in mid 2008, included a Models of Practice project, two Pedagogy Planner projects, nine implementation and evaluation projects and a Support Project run by JISC CETIS. The vision for the Design for Learning Programme, was to bring the technical development and the effective practice strands of JISC e-Learning Programme together, ensuring that the conceptual and practical implementation of ‘design for learning’ is informed by what is known about effective pedagogic practice. This website was very useful for understanding the importance o design online learning and how effective it is for every day users.

Media law: in this week we were advised to use the time to plan our assignment and start researching did this by going to my local library and getting some books related to the assignment on copyright. I also viewed the links provided by lecturer to help me further plan out my assignment. as well as planning out my essay I could not attend 1 of my lectures so this was great opportunity for me to catch up on any missing work or videos that I need to watch.

Contemporary Media Communication: This week as there was no lecture we used the time to catch up with or group work and also any task that were set out individual or instance every group member has to go and interview people from different age groups. I did this during this week. I interviewed 5 people about emotional drive and goals o the bib goals. These interviews were productive and very informative as to the type of music people listen to. I have realised that even though the children are British born they prefer to listen to their home country music. However the older generation do not listen to music that much because o their daily busy lives.

ManagingContemparary Organisation: This week for I planned my assignment. This is by deciding which company I will choose. also I used hits time to catch up and go through any links that I have not done during the past 4 weeks to help me understand what is that is required to input into our assignment. I also looked at the link to Google culture. This is a short video of Google culture in working environment. This helped me decide what type o company I would base my research on formal or informal atmosphere. This was very useful and great short audio to watch.

WEEK 5

LPD & Non-LPD Activities

Learning Professional Development activities’
continued with the blog. This week I will add an image to the blog. This image will be of my self’s also attended all my lectures and seminars so I can edit and write what activities were held in other unit of my course. I find it fairly easy to create eat this blog as I have been doing this for the past 4 weeks. we had a lecture this week as last week lecture was self study and we had to progress with the blogging found it easy to upload a picture of myself as I already have done this using face book therefore I am familiar with the process.

Human and Financial Management: After learning about the recruitment and selection we now began to look at induction. Induction is the process of familiarising the person to their working environment. To understand this better we did an induction checklist. This included tasks, time, duration, method, and person responsible for the task. So for example. Introduction to health and safety, ties would be on the very first day as health and safety is very important. Duration of this can be up to an hour. Methods to aware the person of this could be presentation or tour. The person responsible to show this would most likely be health and safety officer. We did this in groups as we were given an example o new media user advisor specification. In the seminar. We looked at an exam question also relating induction. This included a very detail answer of how n why induction is important. How it benefits the company itself and its employees. We also addressed important things such as culture social importance to the person who is going to work in your working environment.

Design Online Learning: from the previous week o learning styles we were told to do a test on webs to analyse what type of learners we are. The cults were printed and brought with us to the lecture. We started the lecture by looking at different preferred type of learning. These are visual those who learn more by wafting things pictures, videos etc. Tree is several other types of learners, oral, phisical learners, mathematical etc. to see what sort of learners we are as individual. W did a task in the seminar. This was watching a video visually of a person teaching you how to learn knitting. We watched this video and then were given knitting sticks to see whether we can watch and learn. I personally did this task and was successful at knitting. At first it was quite difficult but later on I found it really easy.

Media law: This week we looked at top 10 copy right myths. This is a website also we looked at copyright and computer software and copyright in composite work. This was viewed by presentation slides. we also did a class test relating this to asset our ability to check the learning outcome of copy right infringment. We also looked at California collegians may be getting a lesson on the limits of sharing. Contempary Media Communications: Last week we completed our questions for the interview making sure we all discussed the questions as a group by deciding what type of question should we include receiving maximum and good result from the ethnic minorities. This was printed out and given to our group so we can all go out there and interview different age groups and bring back 1 audio each o the interview being conducted so we add this to or presentation. we also discussed the age range o the interviews so there are no clashes or too much o the same age group as its very important for us to have onion of different age groups. These questions are differing from the questionnaire as this is not just general questions about the person and the type of music they listen to. It addresses the emotional drive and goals of individuals listening to music. Also we did a presentation for our topic. This was so we can practice as a group to present in front of other fellow students. It included the method of research, and 2008 report on ethnic minorities how these people are using media more and more.

Managing contemporary Organisations: this week we looked at organisational culture in the digital age and have explored defininitions of organisational culture. We also have explored the elements which make up organisational culture, have an understanding of the relationship between organisational structure, culture and climate. This is important to understand so we know the basic requirements of an organisation and how important culture can be for the recruiting team and employees. To father understand this we worked in groups and choose a company. We choose Google and discussed how the culture affected people working there. Google is a company which provides a great comfort zone, including kitchen, cafeteria, and people working informally. People are meeting there for work purposes etc. This was discussed with the class in the seminar looking at various examples.
